The Medical Faculty of the University of Colombo recently transformed into a glamorous Hollywood setting as it played host to an electrifying event that brought together students, faculty, and staff for a night of friendly competition and cinematic knowledge. The occasion? A thrilling movie trivia night that showcased the diverse interests and expertise of the university’s medical community, all amidst beautiful decorations with the theme of the Oscars. The event was expertly organized by the UCFM Film Club.
With the ambiance adorned with golden statuettes and red carpet flair, more than 100 participants eagerly gathered to test their film knowledge across three rounds of questions. From classic Hollywood to contemporary blockbusters, attendees prepared to showcase their cinematic prowess in an evening filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a touch of healthy competition.
What made this trivia night particularly special was the presence of two teams composed of esteemed faculty members. These teams brought not only their wealth of knowledge but also their competitive spirit, adding an extra layer of intensity to the proceedings. As the night unfolded, it became clear that no one, regardless of their background or expertise, was immune to the thrill of the game.
The first two rounds saw teams battle it out, answering questions that ranged from the obscure to the iconic, challenging participants to recall everything from memorable quotes to lesser-known facts about beloved films. From the intricacies of film production to the nuances of on-screen performances, each question offered a chance for participants to showcase their love for cinema while vying for the coveted title of trivia champion.
As the rounds progressed, the tension mounted, with each team vying for supremacy in this battle of wits. Cheers erupted as teams correctly answered challenging questions, while groans of frustration echoed through the room when a particularly tricky query stumped even the most seasoned cinephiles.
Yet, it was the final round, a buzzer round, that truly separated the contenders from the pretenders. The room crackled with anticipation as the remaining teams faced off, buzzing in to answer rapid-fire questions in a bid to clinch victory. It was here that the team “Suicide Squad” truly shone, showcasing their lightning-fast reflexes and encyclopedic knowledge of film. With an impressive 8 out of 10 correct answers, they demolished their opponents in the final, leaving the other team, “Pop Corn,” unable to buzz in for any of the questions.
As the final buzzer sounded and the dust settled, “Suicide Squad” emerged victorious, basking in the glory of their triumph. Their victory earned them a handsome prize of 20,000 rupees, adding an extra layer of excitement to an already exhilarating night.
In a heartwarming gesture, Professor Chang, the senior treasurer of the UCFM Film Club, took to the stage to deliver an enlightening speech about the importance of events like these outside of the medical curriculum. He emphasized the value of fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among students, faculty, and staff, thanking the organizers for their hard work in making the trivia night a resounding success.
A heartfelt vote of thanks was delivered by Devin Cooray, the Secretary of the movie club,expressing gratitude to all participants for their enthusiasm and sportsmanship. As participants dispersed, already looking forward to the next event, one thing remained certain: the love for movies will continue to unite and inspire the diverse community that calls the Medical Faculty of the University of Colombo home.
